December 2000

Professor Susan Greenfield CBE, Director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain; Professor of Pharmacology, University of Oxford has agreed to give the Opening Plenary presentation. She leads a multi-disciplinary group studying neurodegenerative disorders. At medinfo2001 she will explore the ‘Brain of the Future’ through the possibilities and implications posed by the neuroscientific advances for the coming century including mapping of the human genome.

After graduating from St Hilda’s College, Oxford, amongst her activities she has held fellowships in the Department of Physiology, Oxford; the College de France, Paris and NYU Medical Center, New York. She has also held a Visiting Research Fellowship at the Institute of Neuroscience, La Jolla, USA, and was the 1996 Visiting Distinguished Scholar, Queens University, Belfast.

She has published widely, her latest book being ‘The Private Life of the Brain’ (Penguin) published in June 2000. In 1994 she was the first woman to give the Royal Institution Christmas lectures and has subsequently made a wide range of broadcasts on TV and radio.

She received the Michael Faraday medal from the Royal Society for making the most significant contribution in 1998 to the public understanding of science, as well as receiving the "Woman of Distinction" 1998 award from Jewish Care. In 2000 she was elected to an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.

ExCeL opens its doors to the public

After a period of closed events, ExCeL the venue for the medinfo2001 congress opened its doors on November 30 to its first large public show. Extensive facilities on the North side of the venue have been identified for the medinfo2001 congress and will allow the entire main tutorial, scientific presentation, workshop and exhibition to be held together.
