A1: The virtual naked patient: privacy, confidentiality and security in the information age
Fleur Fisher MD is now and independent consultant in ethics and healthcare practice and Director of Healthcare-Ethics (UK) after 30 years in clinical medicine and 11 years in senior management.
Five years in general practice, followed by a career developing community family planning services and involvement in sex education, led to her appointment as one of the first wave of general managers in the UK National Health Service in 1985. She led a community/mental health unit in NW England, managing psychiatric, learning difficulty, paediatric, rehabilitation and all community services for 6 years.
From 1983-1991 she was politically active in medical politics and a member of BMA Council.
In 1991, she was appointed Head of Ethics, Science and Information at the British Medical Association and became their media spokesperson on these subjects. She led the BMA’s campaign on Confidentiality of Identifiable Health Data and won a $1million contract from the Department of Health to establish a National Centre for Clinical Audit, leading a partnership with the Royal College of Nursing and 12 other professional organisations. She was the first Chairman of the NCCA’s Management Board.
She is currently Chairman of the BMA Foundation for AIDS; Vice-Chairman of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance; Co-Chair of POPAN (Prevention of Professional Abuse Network); Founder Trustee and Advisory Council member of FIPR (Foundation for Information Policy Research); Committee Member, BCS PHCSG (Primary Healthcare Specialist Group); Council Member FIM (Foundation for Integrated Medicine) and Advisor to the Y-Theatre Touring Group.
