Welcome Reception

National Maritime Museum, Greenwich

Sunday 2nd September

Please join us for a ‘Welcome’ drink and the opportunity of visiting the world renowned National Maritime Museum, situated in historic Greenwich.

The London borough of Greenwich stretches for eight miles along the Thames. Two sailing vessels lie in dry dock on the river’s edge - the Cutty Sark, the last surviving tea clipper and Gipsy Moth IV, the sailing ketch in which Sir Francis Chichester made the first solo circumnavigation of the world during 1966-67. Parks and woodlands form a quarter of the borough, the most spectacular of which is Greenwich Park, London’s oldest royal park.

Set on a hill in the park lies the Royal Observatory, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1675 and from where time – Greenwich Mean Time – around the world is calculated. Below the observatory lies the Queen’s House, designed by Inigo Jones in 1616 for James I's wife. This perfect Palladian villa is connected by a colonnade to the third building in this museum complex – the National Maritime Museum.

Recently renovated and modernised, the museum re-opened in the Spring of 1999. The story of Britain’s rich and colourful seafaring heritage is vividly told through displays containing the world’s greatest collection of maritime treasures and artefacts. Using art, sound, models and modern technology, visitors are taken from the times of Viking explorers to visions of the future. The stories of great naval battles and of famous mariners, including Captain Cook and Admiral Lord Nelson, are dramatically brought to life. From the podium, you can glimpse the stern of a ship that fought at Trafalgar, a modern round-the-world yacht and features on the ecology of the oceans. Bridges lead into themed galleries on marine art, international trade, great maritime institutions of London, liners and their passengers, nautical costume, sea power and the world’s first exhibition devoted to the story of the ‘heroic age’ of Antarctic exploration.

All of this and much more is there for you to visit and enjoy during our ‘Welcome to medinfo2001
